Kuala Penyu, Manggatal folks: Why the uncollected cut grass
The pile of mud on this pavement in Taman Richdar has since become overgrown with weeds.
A KUALA Penyu resident and another from Manggatal have taken the government concessionaire to task for the lackadaisical manner in which the verge and roadside drain in their respective areas are being maintained.

The former said the company’s workers dealt with the grass along the stretch leading to Kg Purun Pasir, where he lives, earlier this month but did not take away the trimmings afterwards

The cut grass was apparently still lying all over the road shoulder several days later when he contacted Hotline.

On top of this, the individual noticed that some of the grass had not been trimmed all the way down, as bits of it were still protruding in places from this reserve land.

The Manggatal resident, on the other hand, was displeased about the silt left behind, when the firm’s labourers last attended to her frontyard drain in Taman Richdar this year.

She said the pile of mud had been lying on the pavement outside her fence for so long that weeds had begun sprouting from this earth.

Their grievances were separately forwarded to the Kuala Penyu District Council, and City Hall.

A Council spokesman said the government concessionaire had been alerted to what had transpired in Kg Purun Pasir.

He said the company was responsible for maintaining the roads which belonged to the agency, including the one which led to the village.

“The firm was appointed by the Finance Ministry to look after the stretches, as well as the reserve land on either side,” he said.

When asked if the Council had a hand in overseeing the work performed by these firms, the spokesman declined to comment.

“The Ministry has its own supervisor who is meant to double-check that our roads are being dealt with as they should.

“This maintenance includes tending to the verges along these stretches in a timely fashion.”

The Kuala Penyu resident uses a measuring tape to gauge the height of the grass left behind after the concessionaire’s workers had left.

JURIED of Kuala Penyu took umbrage with the slipdash way in which the grass along the access road to Kg Pasir Purun was trimmed recently.

“Some of the blades of grass were only partially cut,” he said. There were still stalks sticking out from sections of the verge after the grass-cutters had left.”

The resident measured these protrusions and found that they were between 10 to 16 inches in height.

Juried said grass-cutters workers did not clean up the trimmings once they were done.

“Most of the dried grass has since been blown onto the road.”

Manggatal homeowner AUDRA, meanwhile, decried the latest effort to de-sludge the roadside drain in one part of Taman Richdar as being a “half-hearted” job.

“The contents of the drain were piled up on the pavement a few metres away from the gate to my house and a portion of it was not removed,” she said.

She said this was not the first time that an unsightly mound of dirt had been left behind in front of her residence.

“This has been happening on and off for the past six years,” Audra said. “The mud eventually dries and either gets blown into the drain or washes back inside when it rains.”

A spokeswoman for City Hall’s Landscaping Department said an inspection was made of the neighbourhood shortly after it learned about this irregularity.

“Our staff confirmed the presence of the dried mud on the pavement near the rate-payer’s home,” she said.

She said the government concessionaire was apprised of these findings and advised to take the necessary action.

The spokeswoman said the company was responsible for maintaining the front yard drains, while City Hall tended to those behind residences under its jurisdiction.

The former were cleaned according to a fixed schedule, with the same being done to the latter once every six months, according to her.

“We have called on the company to increase its maintenance efforts in Taman Richdar so that the public here get some relief from the drainage woes which the rate-payer has highlighted.”

“By the same token, our workers will try to come in even before the scheduled cleaning, to deal with any complaints involving the back yard drain.”
