PETALING JAYA: The draft memorandum of understanding (MoU) on constituency funds for opposition MPs is almost ready, according to deputy prime minister Fadillah Yusof.

Fadillah said once the draft is finalised, it will be reviewed by top leaders from the unity government and the opposition.

“We are still finalising the draft, but I have outlined its main contents. Firstly, how all MPs can work (together) towards the country’s development and economic recovery.

“Secondly, to ensure stability so that we can attract as many tourists as possible and to prevent contentious matters from dividing the people – 3Rs (race, religion and royalty) and such,” he said after chairing the National Science Council meeting today, reported Berita Harian.

Asked when the draft would be completed, Fadillah said there was no deadline in place.

“But I’m not sure (if there is any deadline) set within Perikatan Nasional (PN) to approve the draft because there are some on that side saying there is no need for such an agreement. We’ll see, let’s complete the draft first,” he added.

On April 18, it was reported that the government would prepare a draft MoU on constituency funds for opposition MPs after the unity government agreed in principle to “consider allocating funds” to opposition parliamentarians.

Fadillah, who was tasked with negotiating with the opposition on its demands for constituency funds, previously said the decision to meet yesterday followed his meeting with opposition leader Hamzah Zainudin in Parliament on March 19.

Hamzah was reported to have said PN would make a decision after thorough examination of the terms in the draft MoU.

On April 6, FMT reported that Hamzah, who is also the PN secretary-general, said he received a draft agreement on constituency funds for opposition MPs from a representative of a “high-ranking individual”, but declined to reveal more details.

Fadillah denied the existence of such a draft agreement at the time.
