Six lives lost in separate Sabah mishaps
The motorbike that crashed into a drain near Towering roundabout.
Kota Kinabalu: Six people, including a baby, were killed in separate accidents throughout the State over the weekend.

In SEMPORNA, a nine-month old girl was killed along with two others while three more were seriously injured when a Perodua Viva and Toyota Avanza collided along Km32 Jalan Semporna-Tawau, on Saturday.

District Police Chief Supt Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the deceased in the Viva were a 24-year-old local woman and 66-year-old foreigner as well as the baby.

The driver of the Viva and two other passengers, a seven-year old boy and 10-year old girl, suffered serious injuries in the 4.50pm incident.  

The Viva was reportedly heading towards Semporna from Tawau, when it lost control, veered into the opposite lane and crashed into the oncoming Toyota.

“The Viva driver and passengers were taken out from their vehicle by Fire and Rescue personnel and members of public and sent to Semporna Hospital for treatment.

“However, three of the passengers died while receiving treatment,” he said, Sunday.

The driver of the Toyota escaped unhurt while his two passengers, a woman and a man, both China nationals suffered minor injuries and continued their return trip to China.

Mohd Farhan said both drivers were not suspected drunk. Investigation is still ongoing under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

In PENAMPANG, two foreigners were killed after their motorcycle crashed into a drain while trying to avoid a fallen spare tyre from a truck near the Towering roundabout on Sunday.

Penampang Deputy Chief of Police DSP Erwansyah Abdul Basir said both vehicles were travelling in the same direction towards Kota Kinabalu in the 6.30am incident.

“Initial investigations found the accident to be caused from a commercial truck’s spare tyre which fell in the middle of the road. 

“The 27-year-old motorcyclist tried to avoid it and crashed into the drain on the left side.

“He and another male victim, 17, was confirmed dead at the scene by medical officers on duty.

Their remains were sent to Queen Elizabeth Hospital 1 for a post-mortem,” he said. Four other individuals involved in the accident were unharmed. 

The case is being investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 while police are asking witnesses to step forward and assist investigation.

In KENINGAU, a woman died on the spot when a Proton Wira collided with a Toyota Vigo at Mile 27 of the Keningau-Tenom road early Sunday.

The 22-year-old was confirmed dead by the Medical Officer of the Ministry of Health Malaysia (KKM) and the victim’s body was handed over to the police for further action.

A 17-year-old male passenger in the Wira suffered injuries and was given initial treatment by the EMRS team while the driver of the Toyota, a 38-year-old man only suffered minor injuries.
