‘Be focused, decisive, resilient’, advice to young entrepreneurs

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah’s young entrepreneurs were told to be focused, decisive in their business decision-making directions and be resilient and not afraid to fail, from where they can learn great lessons to rise up again and be successful.

“You have to make your decision, trust your instinct which is one of my fundamental rules, despite all the second opinions you solicited. You cannot come to me for a decision. You need to have a contingency plan.

“When you make your decision, you must know what if it goes wrong. You should learn from your stupid decision,” said panel speaker Robert Wong Choon Shein, Chairman of Agrow Malaysia Sdn Bhd. The occasion was an entrepreneur masterclass.

Fellow panel speaker Datuk Sia Teong Heng, Managing Director and CEO of SBC Corporation Berhad explained that the “Culture of Failing” is something that society has not recognised and included as part of learning and experience. Some people fear being blamed as the people who made wrong decisions.

According to the organiser and moderator Dato George Lim of the Sabah Entrepreneurship Transformation (SET) Entrepreneurs Masterclass 2024, “leadership is to focus on doing one big thing rather than many things.”

“Sabah Entrepreneurship Transformation (SET) started the mission in 2018 to create 100 entrepreneurs yearly. To date, we have created more than 500 entrepreneurs and impacted more than 50,000 business communities.

“You are more likely to succeed by devoting your resources to focus on doing one big thing.

“During my young age, I was afraid to fail, I was always sick, and did not do well in exams. This fear is always with me, which makes me feel vulnerable.

“It reminded me to keep changing for a better self. Fear has become a driving force to make sure that I do not stop learning.

“My father did not have faith in me, it was my mother who supported me and sent me overseas for study. I graduated with my first degree in Accountancy at the age of 26 in New Zealand where I met my wife Angela, we got married 27.

“Fear became my self-motivation, it challenged me to life-long learning. At the age 47, I further my study in Shanghai and obtained my MBA degree.

“What is your Dream? What is your goal in 5 years? Let’s virtualise yourself 5 years from now? Set targets that are 10 times greater than what you believe you can achieve,” Lim exhorted.

“What are you deeply passionate about? What can you be the best in the world at? What will people pay you to do? If you focus your energy on one goal and pursue this goal until completion, you will be more likely to succeed.

“It reduces ‘distractions’ by prioritising opportunities. This makes us stand out from the others. The future leadership is about curiosity, having a beginner mindset, paying attention to what is changing in our surrounding environment.

“The best strategy for growth is to stay connected and seek help. Good leadership is about listening, learning, questioning and keep asking ourselves the relevant life goal questions,” Lim said.
