Malaysian Junior Hockey League: 44 players to represent Sabah

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Hockey Association will be represented by 44 players in the Malaysian Junior Hockey League scheduled to start from June 4-June 28.

Its president Dato’ Sri Anil Jeet Singh said on Friday that the average age of the team is only 19 and they will be taking part in the men’s division one and the women’s division.

“Many of the players in the team will be playing in the Malaysia Games (Sukma) 2024 in Sarawak this August as well, and some who are much younger can still play at the next Sukma Games in 2026,” he said.

He targeted the men’s team who finished ninth in division one last year to take the division two title, having won it  twice in 2009 and 2021.

He also thanked the Youth and Sports Ministry and Sabah Sports Council for their financial assistance.

“It will cost us at least RM200,000 just to compete in the Youth League and we are very appreciative to the Youth and Sports Ministry and Sabah Sports Council for the support.

“I am also hoping that they will make more funds available to any State sports association whose athletes excel so that they can participate in more national tournaments.

“This is important because it will provide opportunity to players from the State to be selected for the national youth programme and absorbed into senior team.”

According to him, Sabahan hockey players who are currently in the national squad are Shello Silverius, Adrian Andy Albert, Muhajir Abdu Rauf (men senior), Abdul Khaliq Hamirin (men indoor) Andywalfian Jeffrynus (men youth), Juliani Mohd Din (women senior), Iren Hussin and Nor Asfarina Issahyifiqa Isahidun (women indoor).
