Egyptian fined RM15,000 for overstaying
The offence under Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act carries a fine, or jail, or both, on conviction.
Kota Kinabalu: A 38-year-old Egyptian was fined a total of RM15,000 for immigration offences.

Sessions Court Judge Noor Hafizah Mohd Salim meted out the sentence to Emad Galal Abdelkarim Gharib who pleaded guilty to two charges which were read in Arabic Friday.

On the first count, Emad was fined RM10,000 in default 60 days’ jail for overstaying in the State after his social visit pass had expired for 10months and five days since Feb 28, 2023 at 2.40pm on Jan 3 this year at the Silver Coast Sdn Bhd 88 Market Place in Jalan Pintas, here.

The offence under Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act carries a fine, or jail, or both, on conviction.

On the second count, he was ordered to pay another RM5,000 or spend 60 days in prison for leaving an airport without the permission of the immigration officer after being informed that he was prohibited from entering Sabah.

He committed the offence between 3.20am and 5.20am on May 14, 2023 at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport, here.

During mitigation, Emad who informed the court that his lawyer was in Egypt, asked for leniency saying that he did not understand the entry document needed in Sabah.

He also claimed that he was cheated by his friend in Egypt that the problem (regarding his pass) could be solved in Malaysia.

Emad also wished to apply for a permit as he did not have intention to breach the Malaysia’s Law because he saw Malaysia a place to make money.

He also pleaded to be allowed to return to Egypt soon as possible after serving sentence and would be back in Malaysia with appropriate permit to open business.

However, Prosecuting Officer Abu Sopian from the Immigration Department, urged the court to impose an appropriate sentence as a lesson for others.
