Kota Kinabalu: Sabah’s inaugural MIID REKA Sabah Conference themed ‘Exploring IMPACT’ is a resounding success well attended by architects and interior designers in practice, academicians and students at Hyatt Centric on Jan 27.

The event was organised by the Malaysian Institute of Interior Designers (MIID), featuring four top professional speakers Ar. IDr Tan Bee Eu, IDr Ahmad Zaini Zainul Abidin, Peter Tay and Ramesh Subramaniam detailing their expertise and track record experience and achievements.

The conference was a landmark event that brought together industry professionals, enthusiasts and experts to explore the evolving landscape of interior design. REKA Sabah represents a significant step forward in developing a vibrant and collaborative design community in Sabah.

MIID President IDr Ooi Boon Seong, who officiated the event, said: “In today’s ocular world, design is often perceived through the construct of ‘beauty’.

“The power of social media has reinforced the visual dominance of space, popularised by the catchphrase ‘instagrammable’ space.

“This has overpowered the purpose and more importantly, the impact of design. While design is a simple word, its meaning is a complex one.

“To design is to bring compelling ideas to life. Design seeks to solve problems and the process of design begins from ideation to manifestation.

“What’s the impact of interior design in real life? How can design change the world?

“Design makes an impact when it brings positive effects to lives, when it is compassionate, when it is in sync with the user’s values, when it is meaningful and well-thought out, when it is accessible and inclusive, when it is ethical and responsible.

“The REKA Sabah conference curates a host of speakers to share their views on the impact of design, underpinned by works they produce in their everyday interior design practice,” Ooi said.

The Malaysian Institute of Interior Designers is proud to launch REKA Sabah as its pioneering initiative designed to foster growth and innovation in the interior design industry in East Malaysia, he added.

REKA Sabah aims to promote, expand and grow MIID membership in East Malaysia, and to unite members from West and East Malaysia to share their knowledge and views on issues related to interior design.

By aligning interior design practices in Sabah with international standards, REKA Sabah aims  to enhance the value of the built environment, making Sabah a hub for quality living, working environments, and a preferred destination for tourism and property investment.

Sabah’s rich natural resources, particularly timber, play a crucial role in the development of its interior design industry.

The creative and sustainable utilisation of these resources not only adds aesthetic value but also contributes to the economic growth and environmental stewardship in the region.

The “Impact” theme of this inaugural conference highlighted the profound influence of interior design in various sectors, including tourism, property development and retail with the focus from mere aesthetics to the true purpose and impact of design- solving problems, enriching lives, and creating space s that are compassionate, accessible, inclusive, ethical and responsible.
