Mahathir should do some self-reflection, says Fahmi

Kuala Lumpur: Government spokesman Fahmi Fadzil today urged Dr Mahathir Mohamad to engage in self-reflection after the former prime minister dared Anwar Ibrahim to call for an election to test his support among Malaysians.

Fahmi, who is also the communications minister, said Mahathir should reflect on his defeat in Langkawi during the 15th general election (GE15), resulting in the loss of his deposit. Anwar, meanwhile, went on to win the Tambun parliamentary seat.

“So I suggest, as a statesman, he should practise some self-reflection in these twilight days (of his).

“We should leave behind a good legacy instead of just fearmongering and spreading stories like this,” he told reporters after launching the Rahmah p-hailing data plan package.

Yesterday, Mahathir claimed that his former deputy was abusing his power by getting the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to investigate his political enemies and influencing the judiciary to let his allies off the hook.

He said he himself had never resorted to such measures in his over two decades in power.

Fahmi, in response, denied any government interference in MACC’s investigations.

“MACC is free to conduct any investigation deemed appropriate. We (the government) do not interfere, so it is up to MACC to take any legal and reasonable action they see fit,” he said.

He described Mahathir’s claims as an attempt to influence opinions, saying the former prime minister was simply seeking to exploit political and vindictive sentiments by suggesting that MACC’s inquiries into specific individuals were politically motivated.

Anwar was appointed Malaysia’s 10th prime minister on Nov 24, 2022, after GE15 resulted in a hung Parliament.

He obtained the majority support to form the government after being backed by MPs from Pakatan Harapan, Barisan Nasional, Gabungan Parti Sarawak, Gabungan Rakyat Sabah, Warisan and others.

Mahathir was among the 369 candidates who lost their deposits after securing less than one-eighth of the votes.
