TAWAU: The district’s crime index declined to 795 cases last year, a rate (below 800 cases) recorded by the Tawau Police Headquarters for two consecutive years from 2022, compared to an average of over 1,000 cases in previous years.

Tawau District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin attributed the accomplishment to the officers and personnel’s efforts to combat crime and drug offenders in the district.

According to him, the number of cases sent to the Criminal Investigation Division decreased significantly last year, with 3,382 reports versus 4,833 in 2019.

“These data are the result of a study through the Integrated Police Reporting System, which showed that crime in Tawau has dropped compared to previous years,” he said after the Tawau Police Headquarters’ 2024 Appreciation Ceremony on Tuesday.

During the ceremony, Jasmin presented certificates of appreciation to 18 senior officers, including department heads and police station chiefs, as well as 14 media personnel.

In terms of arrests, the Tawau Narcotic Crime Investigation Division made 1,421 arrests in 1,384 cases for various drug offences last year.

“A total of 24 cases and 38 arrests were made involving investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which involved the seizure of 50.6kg of syabu and 19.4kg of ganja, the amount of this seizure actually increased to 22.4kg from 2022.

“In addition to crime, we are targeting drug cases by focusing on arrests and boosting the volume of seizures under Section 39B,” he said.

Jasmin appreciated his senior officers’ great work in preserving order in the district, scoring many successes as evidenced by the decline in Tawau’s crime index figures.

“We also extend our appreciation to the media who have helped the police force by conveying messages to the community and indirectly giving a positive effect and impact on our effort to fight against crime and drugs in the district,” he said.

He regarded the function of the media as critical in the police’s assignment as a conduit of information to the community.

“Without the media, we will become self-absorbed. The community relies on the media to learn about the police, especially our effectiveness in combating crime and drugs, through official media outlets as well as social media,” he said.

Jasmin hoped Tawau Police Headquarters’ exceptional performance and partnership with the media would continue this year and in the years ahead in order to achieve a peaceful and prosperous Tawau district.

He also handed over the Anugerah Khas (Balai Polis Sejahtera 2023) to Bombalai Police Station and the Anugerah Khas (Tokoh Tawau Sejahtera 2023) to Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department Head ASP Dg Nur Azarinawaty Ag Kachee at the ceremony.
