No sign of Malaysia’s road links
The Indonesian side of the border with its completed sealed tarred road using asphalt from Malaysia. The roadsides are lined with some Indonesian national flags.
BAKELALAN: The gravel logging road from here to Lawas town has not been expanded and sealed although Indonesia has built its all-weather sealed road from Nunukan to the border with Ba’kelalan at Long Midong.

Indonesia completed the construction work of Malinau-Long Semamu-Long Bawan-Long Midong (Indonesia) that is supposed to link to Lawas in Sarawak, as well as the Malinau-Mensalong-Tau Lumbis that is supposed to link to Keningau in Sabah and the Malinau-Langap-Long Kemuat-Long Nawang (Indonesia) that is supposed to link to Sibu in Sarawak.

Roads from Nunukan, expected to be completed by 2023, will cut through several protected areas, including Kayan Mentarang National Park, which contains the largest unbroken stretch of rainforest in North Kalimantan.

The 1.36m hectare (3.36m acre) area – more than twice the size of Bali – is central to the Heart of Borneo initiative and home to more than 10 indigenous communities.
