PAS open to working with Umno via PN, says Tuan Ibrahim
PAS and Umno last worked together through the Muafakat Nasional pact, inked after the 14th general election.
PETALING JAYA: A PAS leader says the Islamist party is open to working with Umno again despite the “bitter” history between them.

PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man however said that any collaboration with Umno must be through the Perikatan Nasional (PN) platform, which also includes Bersatu.

“The party has never sidelined the agenda of fostering unity through the ummah,” he told FMT.

“Collaboration with any party is feasible through PN because, as the main party, all political cooperation must be approved by the syura council.”

Yesterday, Umno Supreme Council member Isham Jalil spoke of a need for the unification of Malay parties to jointly govern the nation again.

Isham also said the recently elected Kemaman MP, Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, could become the prime minister if PN forged a consensus with Umno before the 16th general election.

Umno and PAS joined forces after the 14th general election, forming the Muafakat Nasional (MN) pact during their time in the opposition.

However, tension escalated after PAS joined the Bersatu-led PN, leading to Umno’s exit from MN.

In the 15th general election, Umno contested independently under Barisan Nasional, winning just 30 seats while PN secured 74.

Awang Hashim, a member of the PAS central committee, also said that the door remained open to Umno, citing the spirit of unity among the ummah.

Citing PAS’s past “marriages” with other parties, the Pendang MP said, “We have a lot of experience in political cooperation, including with DAP. We understand each other’s culture.

“MN is one of the things that we are cultivating to continue the unity of the ummah.”
