TAMBUNAN: Deputy Chief Minister 1 Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan praised the efforts and ideas of a local native from Tambunan, Ir. Joe Primus Kayau, who brought forth a green technology innovation of a gravity water filter system capable of producing up to 200,000 litres of clean water per day.

He said Joe’s efforts brought a significant impact and revolutionised the supply of clean water to isolated rural communities.

“Joe’s idea, which was originally used to solve the water problem in his village, caught the attention of State Rural Development Minister Datuk Jahid Jahim and the Federal Ministry of Rural and Regional Development (KKDW), leading to the implementation of the Gravity Water Community Project in several isolated rural areas.

“I am honoured to be here to present the excellent innovation of a local Sabahan and the research conducted by a team of experts from Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS),” he said when officiating the Clean Green Technology Gravity Water System in Kampung Sintuong-Tuong, here.

Jeffrey, who is also State Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry Minister, said with the advanced technology, thousands of rural people will get to enjoy clean water supply.

He said one of the uniqueness of the system is its ability to obtain clean water from natural sources by maintaining the authenticity and integrity of natural drainage.

“The high-tech elements used in the system make it capable of producing water that is clean and free from pollution based on the set standards.

“I hope more communities can enjoy the benefits of this high-tech clean gravity water system.

“This system not only benefits the community but also has a positive impact on the environment by reducing the endless extraction of natural water resources,” he added.

He thanked KKDW and Jahid for proposing the implementation of the project in Tambunan and all parties who contributed to its success.

Jeffrey is confident that the clean gravity water system with green technology will be an effective solution to the problem of clean water supply for the rural communities.

According to Joe, the implementation of the Clean Gravity Water with Green Technology started last September and was completed end of November.

“The project costing less that RM500,000 has benefited more than 40 houses in Kampung Sintuong-Tuong,” he said.

Dr Gaim James Lunkapis from the UMS Faculty of Social Sciences said they collaborated with business partner Pembinaan Kiawayan Sdn Bhd to solve the water supply problem in the rural areas.

“The clean gravity water supply with green technology does not require electricity and sophisticated equipment. It consists of intake technology which has already been patented, going through three stages of filtration and water collection in a storage tank before being distributed to the beneficiaries,” he said.

Dr Gaim James said the first project in Kampung Rungus Nahaba with research status was funded by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (Mosti).

He said with allocations from KKDW, six villages have implemented the project and three more will be completed this year.

The six villages are Kampung Koliposuan in Tamparuli, Kampung Bukit Mengidam, Telupid, Kampung Tukalilan and Kampung Langsat, Tenom, Kampung Tudan, Kiulu and Kampung Sintuong-Tuong, Tambunan.

Also present at the ceremony were District Officer Sabitun Makajil and ministry officials.
