Kota Kinabalu: Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) is all set for  its inaugural Annual General Assembly today (Monday) at Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC), here.

Gagasan Rakyat President Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, who is also Chief Minister, would officiate the event which is expected to be attended by more than 5,000 people, including delegates, GRS component leaders and observers, among others.

Hajiji on Sunday, accompanied by Deputy President Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun, Vice President, Datuk Dr Haji Mohd Arifin Mohd Arif and Secretary General Datuk Mohamed Razali Razi visited the venue to ensure preparations were proceeding smoothly.

Organising Chairman Datuk Abdul Kassim Razali said all 74 divisions, including from Labuan, would attend.

Abdul Kassim, who is also Chief Political Secretary to the Chief Minister, said Gagasan Rakyat which was launched on March 2, has some 300,000 members so far.

“This shows that PGRS which is less than a year old, has the support of the people,” he said.

Hajiji when launching Gagasan Rakyat last March, said Sabahans finally have a party they can call “home” and which would strengthen Gabungan Rakyat Sabah’s struggle.

“Finally, we have our own home. This party is our home, which we will care for. In our home we are the masters and will preserve as best we can,” he had said.

Hajiji had said political developments over the last five years produced two significant trends, namely that Sabahans want a local party to lead Sabah, while at the same time inclusiveness through the participation of multiple parties rather than one single party as happened in the past.

“A government that has a ‘checks and balances’ element that is strong yet inclusive.”  Hajiji said cooperation with national parties should not be rejected because “we need to live in a federal ecosystem”.

“The presence of national parties remains relevant as long as the spirit, core and agenda of the State’s struggle are never compromised.

“The synergy of local and national elements must be based on the principle of putting the interests of the State as a priority agenda (Sabah First) and positioning the interests of the State as an important component of the national agenda,” he had said.
