Twelve, including teen, plead guilty to rioting in Cheras

Kuala Lumpur: A dozen individuals, including a teenager, pleaded guilty in the magistrates’ court here today to rioting at Kampung Malaysia Tambahan in Cheras earlier this month.
They were fined RM3,000 each, or three months’ jail in default, by magistrate Illi Marisqa Kharizan after making the plea.

The first group of accused were Farid Khalid, 35, Amir Aizuddin Alfarizan, 23, Lum Chang Sing, 24, Hakimi Hanafi, 27, and Muhammad Firdaus, 26.
The second group comprised Chan Weng Loon, 25, Khoo Ming Ru, 30, Wong Jia Jet, 26, Tan Jin Aun, 26, Wong Zi Jing, 25, Wan Yi Han, 28, and a teenager only known as Kesavan, 19.
The charge sheet said they were in possession of dangerous weapons during the riot at about 1.37am on Oct 2 in front of Trinity Aquata condominium at Kampung Malaysia Tambahan.
The offence under Section 148 of the Penal Code provides for imprisonment of up to five years or a fine, or both, upon conviction.

Counsel Hannan Ishak and Tripatjit Singh represented the first and second group, respectively, while deputy public prosecutor Zuhairi Osman prosecuted.
It was reported that a heated argument between two rival tow truck operators escalated into a riot. A video of the incident, showing the altercation between the two groups, had been widely circulated on social media.
