SEPANG: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has started questioning former 1MDB legal counsel Jasmine Loo in its investigation into corruption and money laundering involving the sovereign wealth fund.

MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki said the questioning started on Monday, and that Loo, a former associate of fugitive financier Low Taek Jho, or Jho Low, remains in police custody.

Azam told reporters MACC expects to take three days to question Loo. “If we need more time, we will liaise with the police,” he said.

Asked if the authorities are close to detaining Low, Azam said: “In my opinion, not yet.”

Loo was arrested by police in July to assist in the investigation into the 1MDB scandal. Her lawyers later said she surrendered herself to the police and would cooperate with the authorities in their investigation.

Two days ago, police seized assets totalling at least RM93.2 million that were linked to the 1MDB scandal and were acquired under Loo’s name. She had declared the assets to the police.

Previously, deputy Inspector-General of Police Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said Loo will be handed over to MACC after police complete their investigaion.

Azam said the police and MACC will do their best to return other 1MDB-linked assets and funds.

Separately, he declined to comment on the discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) granted to deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi in his Yayasan Akalbudi case, saying he will leave it to MACC’s investigating officers to further investigate the matter.

He also declined to comment on his predecessor Latheefa Koya’s statement that Zahid’s DNAA was “embarrassing”.

“I have no comment about that. What the deputy public prosecutor submitted in court, that’s the answer.”
