Kota Kinabalu: Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) has been urged to speed up the opening of the area bordering Block C, Gaya Street to meet the growing demand for additional hawker stalls at the Api Api Night Food Market.

Making the call, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Datuk Christina Liew said she had conveyed her suggestion (to open up the area along Block C) to Mayor Datuk Noorliza Awang Alip when they met last Tuesday.

The Block C segment is a continuation from that of Block B which, together with Block A, is presently congested and unable to accommodate more hawkers. Block C starts from the RHB premises and stretches till the end of Gaya Street Fair at The Jesselton Hotel.

“Given the influx of international tourists, coupled with the fact that the Api Api Night Food Market is a tourist hotspot, I fully support the hawkers’ request to open up the space along Block C for them to conduct their business operation on Friday and Saturday night.

“I hope DBKK will duly consider the hawkers’ applications for a licence to operate their businesses there. We need to strike a balanced participation of hawkers from all communities,” Liew said in a statement on Sunday.

The Minister, who is also Api Api Assemblywoman, wants DBKK to complete the receiving, processing and approval of licence applications for the Block C section by the end of August.

“By then, the applicants should have drawn lots for their participation in the Api Api Night Food Market, so that the Block C area is ready to be opened for hawking business in September,” she said.

After Liew had launched the Api Api Night Food Market in December 2018, it became an instant popular tourist spot.
