Beer move may hurt Labuan further
Jeffrey also called on the Federal Government to share updates on the proposed Labuan-Sabah bridge project.
Kota Kinabalu: Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan on Wednesday expressed concern over the Customs ruling limiting to four the number of beer cans that can be brought out upon exiting Labuan.

He said since Labuan is a duty-free island, such a restriction could severely affect its already struggling economy.

“While the Federal Government’s role is to safeguard and advance Labuan’s economy, as public servants, we are obliged to voice our concerns over potential errors or opportunities for improvement.

“I have discussed these issues in Parliament, championing for equitable and inclusive economic decision-making that consider the unique circumstances of each region,” said Jeffrey, who is also State Agriculture and Fisheries Minister.

The Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (Star) president hoped Labuan Corporation Chairman Tan Sri Anifah Aman would address the challenges and guide the island towards economic recovery.

“As the people’s representatives, we must promote prosperity for all Malaysians, including Labuan residents.

“I stand alongside them in their quest for effective and enduring economic strategies that respect their distinct status,” he said.

He added that although Labuan is a Federal Territory and is not represented in the Sabah State Assembly, the shared history and geographical proximity underscore the significance of the issue for Sabahans.

Jeffrey also called on the Federal Government to share updates on the proposed Labuan-Sabah bridge project.

“Even if this falls outside Sabah Government’s jurisdiction, it is a topic of substantial public interest, often highlighted during elections.

“A bridge could be instrumental to bolstering Labuan’s connectivity and economic dynamism.”
