PETALING JAYA: Police have completed their probe into an allegation that an officer had extorted a Chinese national when the latter failed to produce her passport during a roadblock.

Acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Yahaya Othman said police submitted the investigation paper (IP) to the Attorney-General’s Chambers yesterday after recording statements from the woman’s friend and the e-hailing driver.

The authorities had previously recorded the statements of five individuals, including the policeman accused of extorting from the woman.

“We sent the IP to the deputy public prosecutor and are awaiting further instructions,” Yahaya told reporters after launching the Safe Driving and Safe House 2023 campaign at the police contingent headquarters here.

The police, however, did not record a statement from the alleged victim as she was no longer in the country.

The case was probed for extortion and improper use of network facilities.

Early this month, a viral TikTok video featured a woman claiming a policeman had extorted her after she failed to produce her passport at a roadblock.

However, the clip did not show any transaction between them.

On a separate matter, Yahaya said up to 60% of the city’s 1.8 million residents would be travelling back to their hometowns to celebrate Hari Raya.

“We hope those leaving the city will inform the police by filling up a form at the police station or via the Volunteer Smartphone Patrol (VSP).

“This will help the police to monitor their houses when they are away,” he said.
