PUTRAJAYA: Former Sabah Chief Minister Tan Sri Bernard Dompok is the new SME Corp Malaysia Chairman.

Entrepreneur Development and Cooperative Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick announced this at a ceremony to hand over appointment letters to the new Chairman and members of the Board of Directors, Tuesday. Ewon hoped the new appointments representing Malay, Indian, Chinese, Kadazandusun and Dayak chambers of commerce will help the Government, particularly the Ministry, to provide the best services to SMEs in the country.

“Our Ministry, especially SME Corp, faces a big challenge in meeting the various needs of SME entrepreneurs across the country, but I believe that with a combination of new and existing leaders, SME Corp can provide good services to the people, especially SME entrepreneurs,” he said. The other members of the SME Corp are Noor Afifah Abdul Razak, Datuk Dr Zunika Mohamed, Datuk Koong Lin Loong, Bell Aggan @ Bell Bernard Aggan, Datuk Ladislaus Maluda, Ter Leong Leng, Prof Dato’ Dr Abdul Razak Omar and Cham Owi Tong.

Also present were SME Corp Malaysia Chief Executive Officer Rizal Nainy and the Ministry’s Secretary General Dato’ Sri Suriani Ahmad.

Ewon also reiterated his commitment to continue helping micro, small and medium enterprises (PMKS), cooperatives, hawkers and small traders throughout the country.

“I have told members of this Ministry that without reducing the existing focus of Ministry, I want additional focus for Sabah and Sarawak.

“The Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) also often mentions the need to give additional focus to Sabah and Sarawak.

“The 2023 National Entrepreneur Development and PMKS Council (MPUPK) meeting chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi recently agreed not only on additional focus but additional budgets for Sabah and Sarawak.

“It’s not that we’re neglecting other areas. It’s just that there is a greater need for us to help Sabah and Sarawak who have felt marginalised from the current development, including in the field of entrepreneurship,” he said.

Ewon believes that the appointment of new and existing board members representing various races in SME Corp’s administration will provide added service value to entrepreneurs in this country.

Meanwhile, Suriani said SME Corp is one of the important agencies in the development of entrepreneurship under the Ministry, in addition to Tekun Nasional for micro-entrepreneurs, Institut Keusahawanan Negara (Insken) and Institut Koperasi Malaysia (Ikma) for entrepreneurs.

“We at the Ministry are very proud and welcome Dompok as the new Chairman of SME Corp. He is not only a well-known leader but has extensive experience in the administration of the country,” she said.
