University status for Jesselton College

Kota Kinabalu: A leading private higher education institution in Sabah, Jesselton College, will now be known as Jesselton University College (JUC).Its President Datuk Dr Chin Yuk Fong said the upgrading came after the university received a certificate of approval presented by Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Binti Ahmad to JUC Corporate Advisor Prof Datin Dr Noor Hamizah Hanifah, accompanied by JUC Board of Director member Senator Dato’ Arman Azha Abu Hanifah.

In conjunction with the upgrade announcement, he said the university also held its first convocation here on July 3, which was officiated by Higher Education Deputy Minister Senator Dato’ Dr Ahmad Masrizal Muhamad.
“A total of 70 graduates received their scrolls from Arman Azha who has shown support and provided various advice to the management of the JUC since 2015,” he added.
On stage to witness the ceremony were JUC officials, namely Dr Noor Hamizah, Datuk Dr Eddy Yusrizal bin Sukardi, Prof Dato’ Dr Fred Chin and Prof Dr Siti Aishah Berhan.
“During the ceremony, several renowned individuals of the nation and society were presented with distinguished awards.

“In recognition of their extensive contributions to the nation, JUC conferred Honorary Degrees upon them. Among those conferred were Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin and Arman Azha who received the Honorary Doctor of Political Science,” said Dr Chin.
He said JUC was founded on Oct 10, 1988 and the upgrade is a testament of the institution’s commitment in providing excellent and quality higher education to students from all across Asia.

He said the institution has demonstrated outstanding and proven track record, which has extended its footprint to a global outreach.
“Apart from being a longstanding recognised higher education institution in Malaysia, it has also set its foot on multiple countries across the globe. JUC is an accredited institution of ASIC, UK, a licensed centre of OTHM, UK and a member of AHEA, USA.
“This historical achievement of both the institution and Sabah also signifies that Jesselton University College is the first home-grown college to be upgraded in Sabah. The people of Sabah is now able to enjoy a wider range of opportunities to pursue higher education as a result of this upgrade,” he said.
