Sabah eyes more Korean tourists
Kota Kinabalu: Sabah hopes to attract at least one per cent, or 500,000, of the over 50 million South Korean population to visit the State annually in the near future. Deputy Chief Minister cum Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Christina Liew said it would be very good if Sabah can achieve that as there are still so many Koreans who must experience Sabah's attractions.

South Koreans rank number two of Sabah's top three international visitors, she said, adding Sabah has, up to October this year, received 267,861 visitors from the country, a 7.5 per cent increase compared to the same period last year.

"Sabah reached a record high of 310,802 South Korean visitors last year, a double-digit growth or a 57 per cent increase compared to 2016," she said when launching the South Korean-based Jeju Air's inaugural twice-weekly flight from Muan to Kota Kinabalu at Hyatt Regency Kinabalu, here, Monday.

Sabah is the only State with services by Jeju Air and Muan is the second city in South Korea that connects to Kota Kinabalu after Seoul.

"With the launch of this new flight route by Jeju Air, we are now connected to two South Korean cities. I was informed that in the second quarter of 2019 Jeju Air would start its Busan-Kota Kinabalu flight. We currently have this connection to Kota Kinabalu and we thank Jeju Air for making that particular route a little merrier," she said.

She said with the connection to Muan by Jeju Air, Sabah is currently entering and reaching out to travellers in secondary cities in South Korea.

"We hope to continue this strategy to receive a continuous flow of South Korean visitors in the years to come," said Liew, adding that 2019 will be a vibrant tourism year for Sabah as there will be new products, exciting events and attractions for all visitors, including those from Korea.
