Duo fined RM9,500 for careless, inconsiderate driving

Kota Kinabalu: Two men were fined a total of RM9,500 by the Traffic Court here, Wednesday, for careless and inconsiderate driving which resulted in an accident.Raynold Ali, 29, was fined RM5,000 or eight months' jail after he admitted to committing the offence while driving a van at Jalan Kg Sagumau, off Jalan Sapulut Donggongon–Tambunan in Penampang at 5.35am on April 30, last year.

Mohd Redzuan Barun, 33, was fined RM4,500 or six months' jail after he pleaded guilty to the offence committed at Jalan Kota Kinabalu-Papar, near Wisma Datuk Halik Zaman in Putatan at 2.05am on Dec 1, 2014.

Prosecuting officer Inspector Hanif Mamyudi told the court that Raynold failed to control his car and had entered the opposite lane while manoeuvring a bend and collided with a 4WD vehicle from the opposite direction.

The driver of the 4WD sustained light injuries but his two passengers suffered severe injuries.

Meanwhile, Hanif said Redzuan, who was from Kota Kinabalu and heading towards Putatan, hit the rear of a lorry he was overtaking, resulting in him losing control of his vehicle and hitting an oncoming motorcyclist.

The accident caused the motorcyclist to suffer severe injuries as well as damages to the lorry.

Both Raynold and Redzuan, who were not represented, requested for leniency.

They had committed an offence under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 (Amended 1999) which carries a fine of between RM4,000 and RM10,000 and liable to jail of up to 12 months on conviction.

Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie also ordered Raynold's and Redzuan's conviction to be endorsed in their respective driving licences.

In another case, 27-year-old Jakkali Lukin was fined RM2,500 or two weeks' jail for drink driving at Jalan Bundusan in Penampang at 2.35am on Aug 6 this year. – Jo Ann Mool
