Kuala Lumpur: Taichung City, with its fertile soil and mild climate, is the undisputed fruit basket of Taiwan and amongst the many delicious fruits produced in Taichung, the sweet and juicy ponkan (mandarin orange) is one of the most popular during the Spring Festival.

To further develop the Taichung Ponkan brand internationally, representatives from the Taichung City Agriculture Bureau and the Shigang District Farmers’ Association of Taichung City will be coming to Malaysia to promote the fruit.

Pastry in Malaysia for the first time to launch a limited edition of ponkan dessert to enjoy Taichung’s high-quality taste.

This year, the organizer is working with renowned Malaysian bakery chain RT Pastry to launch a range of limited edition ponkan pastries and are inviting Malaysians to experience the rich flavours of Taichung high-quality agricultural products.

The Shigang District Farmers’ Association held a press conference on the 28th of this month, and guests of honor include James Chang, Director of Economic Division, the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Malaysia; Kambric Yin, Deputy Secretary General of the Taiwan Chamber of Commerce & Industry in Malaysia; Eva Peng, Director of Taiwan Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur, and Edmanda Chang, Chief Financial Officer of Khaishen Trading Sdn Bhd.

According to Mr. Liao Shi-Wei (Chief of Marketing and Processing Division, Taichung City Agriculture Bureau), Taichung’s highland climate, clean water and this year’s good weather have led to a great harvest and the ponkan export to Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, Brunei, and Canada is expected to hit 650 metric tons.

Even amongst the high-quality Taiwanese ponkan, those from Shingang are known for their beautiful colour, juiciness and sweet firm pulps, making them some of the most sought after.

Their flesh is the perfect balance of sweet and tanginess, and the packaging has even been awarded the Global Gap and ISO 22000 certification.

Guests and medias listened to Youtuber Chef Hong and representative of RT Pastry sharing their experience in making desserts using Taichung Ponkan.

Mr. Fu Yu-Chin (Director of Marketing Department of the Shigang District Farmers’ Association) explained that Malaysians will not only be able to buy the fresh ponkan from major supermarkets, grocers and fruit shops, but will be able to experience the flavours of Taiwanese ponkan in limited edition pastries created by renowned Malaysian bakery, RT Pastry, and internet celebrity chef Mr. Hong Kitchen.

Consumers will get to enjoy the tantalizing Ponkan Cheesecake, Pound Cake and Custard from January 10th at RT Pastry’s Subang branch.

Mr. Hong Kitchen will also launch a special video about the Taichung ponkan on his YouTube channel on January 18th, and viewers will not only be able to learn more about Taiwanese ponkan, but also the ways to incorporate ponkan into festive dishes.
