Countess Mountbatten gets warm welcome

JESSELTON, Thurs, - Countess Mountbatten of Burma, the Superintendent in Charge of the St. John’s Headquarters in London, stepped on the tarmac of the Jesselton Airport this afternoon to be welcomed by His Excellency the Acting Governor and Mrs. Turner, Dr. K. H. Blaauw, the Commissioner of the St. John’s Brigade here, and Miss Irene Checkley, the Headquarters Officer now stationed in North Borneo.

The Countess was introduced to the Commandant of the Guard Mr. Ban and then inspected the Guard of Honour mounted by the St. John’s Brigade and an unit from the British Red Cross Society.

Bouquet Presented

A bouquet made by Mrs. Gray was presented by Miss Elsy Wong following the inspection of the Guard of Honour/

His Excellency then introduced the members of the Executive and Legislative Councils and their wives, the Resident West Coast and Mrs. Hedley.

They were: The Hon. Mr. G. L. Gray and Mrs. Gray; The Hon. Mr. John Ballard and Mrs. Ballard; the Hon. Mr. H. W.

Davidson; the Hon. Mr. J. H. Macartney and Mrs. Macartney; the Hon. Mr. Donald Stephens and Mrs. Stephen and the Hon. Pang Tet Tshung.

At the airport also present were the Brigade Officers, members of the Association and Red Cross. Many community leaders were also present to welcome the Countess on her first visit to North Borneo.

Tour of Town

Later in the day, Lady Mountbatten was shown the town and then went to the St. John’s Hut at Batu Tiga. At the Local St.

John’s HQ she met members of the Centre Committee. She had discussions with the Senior Brigade Officers for a few minute regarding the St. John’s activities here. Dr Blasuw drove the Countess back to Acting Governor’s residence, where she was entertained to a dinner party.

She leaves for Kota Belud tomorrow, accompanied by the Acting Governor and Mrs. Turner, and Miss Checkley.
