IT IS unfortunate that Malaysia is anxious to be at par with other nations of the world and decided to impose Tourism Tax.

There are many ways to impose tax, not necessarily as Tourism Tax.

Malaysia can introduce a Turnover Tax on any establishment.

This was done during the time of Tunku Abdul Rahman and Tun Tan Siew Sin.

A 2pc turnover tax was imposed on all establishments. The amount accured may be more than Tourism Tax.

Malaysia is just beginning to promote tourism, particularly in Sarawak and Sabah.

The name Tourism Tax may, in fact, deter tourists from coming to Malaysia.

They feel that they are coming to spend money and enjoy Malaysia and now they are being taxed.

Therefore, imposing a Turnover Tax will get the same result and may be well received, but does not deter Sarawak and Sabah and the tourists at large.
