Blame tragedy on the town planners

THE tragedy of eight youngsters killed in Johor Baru proves partly that young people are deprived of decent recreational grounds.

Notice that the main padang (field) in cities and towns and many more places have been developed.

Where is the logic of town planners? A conflicting situation. Youngsters need to grow in a right environment.

This is only the tip of the ice berg. The way children are raised in compact urban areas has a profound effect on their personality and values.

Most of the space their parents grew up in is almost gone. The children need space for physical and mental development. I believe overdevelopment is due to poor planning.

City councils should wake up and face the truth. We need more effective leaders there.

They have failed to ensure sustainable development. Every housing developer should make it compulsory to have broad parks for everyone.

Certificates of fitness should be issued only after strict checks. Stress can be reduced with proper planning and holistic dedication of parks and recreation management.

But the parents of the children should be held accountable too. Where is the supervision and discipline?

Parents should be role models and not expect everything from teachers.
