Kota Kinabalu: A 21-year-old lorry driver was jailed for two days and fined RM10, 000 or spend three months’ jail for offering RM150 bribe to a police traffic.

Sessions Court Judge Jason Juga meted out the sentence to Mohammad Asraffi, who pleaded guilty to the charge against him.

Mohammad had offered the bribe to ASP Daniel Dominic who is attached with the Kota Kinabalu Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department.

The bribe was an inducement not to take action against Mohamad for driving without a driving licence and also to release his undocumented girlfriend.

He committed the offence on Apr 23, 2023 at 9.30pm at Jalan Tun Fuad Stephen near the Sabah Maju Jaya building.

The offence under Section 17(b) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009 and punishable under Section 24 (1) of the same Act which provides for a jail term of up to 20 years and a fine of RM10,000 or not less than five times the bribe amount, whichever is higher, upon conviction.

Mohamad who was not represented, asked for leniency.

However, MACC Prosecuting Officer Norsham Saharom urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence on the grounds that it was a serious offence for bribing a government servant.
