Exam proposed for non-Sabahan engineers
Sabah Engineers Association (SEA) office bearers and members.
Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Engineers Association (SEA) has proposed the implementation of a competency examination for out-of-state engineers during its 46th annual general meeting.

The examination is aimed at engineers who are not trained in Sabah and have no knowledge of the different laws and regulations enacted in the state.

Sabah has a unique set of laws and regulations, with 25 out of the 38 laws governing the practice of engineering in Malaysia being specific to Sabah.

These include the Uniform Building By-Laws 2022, Sabah Land Ordinance Cap. 68, Environmental Protection Enactment 2002, and Electricity Supply Enactment 2024, among others.

SEA President, Ir Paul Yap Kok Wai, clarified that the competency examination was proposed to ensure that engineers practising in Sabah are familiar with these laws and regulations.

SEA believes that Sabahan engineers, who pass the Professional Competency Examination based on West Malaysia’s laws and regulations and practice the profession using local laws and regulations in Sabah, are more apt to practice in both regions.

SEA has requested the Sabah State Government to approve a grant to form a panel of experts.

This panel, consisting of practising engineers, legal experts, and academicians, will create a question bank and carry out mock exams to test and refine the SOP, content and conduct of the examination.

SEA aims to promote and uphold the principles and standards in the practice of engineering, protect public interest, and ensure the safety and welfare of the public.

The association also plans to liase, exchange ideas and affiliate with other institutions or associations sharing similar interests.
