Kota Kinabalu: Water from Universiti Malaysia Sabah’s (UMS) two tube wells will be distributed to the institution’s buildings beginning March 26.

UMS Vice-Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Kasim Mansor said the two are among nine tube wells constructed to address the university’s water supply challenges, which are expected to be operational by the end of April.

“Eight of the tube wells are expected to provide at least one million litres of water per day to meet the demands of 22,000 university students.

“Tests on the water content have been identified and the process of distributing water to the buildings and residential colleges is underway,” he told reporters at the UMS Majlis Sungkai Perdana 2024.

Kasim added that UMS now receives four million litres of water each day, up from 1.8 million litres previously.

“This is the result of discussions between the State Government and the Sabah Water Department,” he said, adding the UMS residents’ water needs had been met in recent weeks.

At the event, Etiqa Family Takaful Berhad donated RM80,000 to UMS library’s Islamic Corner Collection, in addition to RM10,000 from the Perbadanan Baitulmal Negeri Sabah.

Head of State’s wife, Toh Puan Norlidah R.M Jasni, graced the handover of UMS zakat contributions through the UMS Zakat Trust Fund to 16 recipients comprising eight staff members and eight students.

The event also included the presentation of RM64,000 in scholarship grants from Tabung Haji to a total of 16 Year One and Two students who were chosen to attend the UMS Huffaz AL-Quran Professional Programme organised by the UMS Faculty of Islamic Studies in partnership with UMS Islamic Centre.
