‘Don’t leave damaged boats by riverside’ call

KUALA PENYU: Fishermen here want the Fisheries Department, District Office and Maritime Department to warn boat owners not to leave their damaged boats by the riverside.

“There is an old boat left by the Sungai Sibasah riverbank near Kg Layang-Layang,” a local, Juri Edoh, complained.

“We want the boat owner to move their boat to another site,” he said, adding that the boat is decayed and that people had demolished its roof.

“As fishermen, we do not agree with those leaving their damaged boats by the riverbank,” he said, claiming that the boat in question had been abandoned for nearly a year since July 2023.

“The river is our source of income and the presence of such derelict boats abandoned by the riverbank will cause hindrance for those wishing to cast their nets,” he said.

He said that such vessels endanger others, particularly at night when visibility is limited.

“We hope the relevant departments will take action and make sure this does not happen as it is disrupting our source of income,” he added.
