BEAUFORT: An oil palm plantation with its peaty condition was destroyed by a fire in Selagon on Friday.

District Fire and Rescue Station Chief Muhammad Hasbulah Nenggok said they received a distress call at 4:56pm and deployed a few firefighters along with machinery and Emergency Medical Rescue Services vehicle (EMRS) to the location.

Firefighters use floating pumps to prevent the fire from spreading.

“A total of 15 acres of oil palm plantation were destroyed, resulting in losses for the farmers,” he said.

The Fire Department has issued warnings to citizens not to engage in open burning during this dry season, as it is a violation under the Environment Act and could result in fines, on conviction.

In another development, the Fire Department also conducted a gotong royong to clean the compound of the district town mosque.

“It was held in conjunction with the month of Ramadan,” said Muhammad Hasbullah.
