PETALING JAYA:  Only 16 “sick” projects have been identified among the 746 in the country, says deputy works minister Ahmad Maslan.

These problems were due to construction delays caused by contractors, he said.

He attributed these delays to financial issues faced by contractors, along with challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, shortage in materials and problems in appointing subcontractors, Bernama reported.

The public works department (JKR) has demonstrated exceptional efficiency in carrying out its responsibilities and successfully completing projects, Ahmad said after inspecting the upgrading and maintenance work at the Penang High Court project site in George Town today.

The upgrading works on the 119-year-old two-storey heritage building, costing RM17.9 million, commenced on Dec 1, 2021. The work is expected to be completed by July 13 this year.

The building faced major issues, such as roof leaks, termite damage, humidity, fungal growth and water stains.
