Inconsiderate driving: Woman is fined RM5,000
Chong was charged under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 (Amended 1999) which carries a fine of between RM5,000 and RM10,000 and liable to jail of up to 12 months, on conviction.
Kota Kinabalu: A 30-year-old woman was fined RM5,000 or 10 months jail by the Traffic Court here for careless and inconsiderate driving which resulted in an accident three years ago.

Chong Li Ying pleaded guilty before Magistrate Wan Farrah Wan Ghazali to committing the offence while driving a Proton Saga at Jalan Kepayan-Kobusak in Penampang, at 11.50am on June 24, 2021.

Investigations revealed that Chong, who was driving from Kg Kobusak to Penampang, had cut into the opposite lane at a corner. A motorcyclist coming from the opposite direction did not have time to avoid a collision, the court heard.

The motorcyclist and the pillion rider skidded to the left of the road and fell.

The motorcyclist suffered injuries while the pillion rider suffered a fractured right thigh and cuts on the right knee, said the prosecution.

Unrepresented, Chong requested leniency by saying that she did not run away after the incident and that it was her first road accident. She promised not to commit similar offence in future.

Traffic prosecuting officer Inspector Mohd Firdaus Che Mustafa applied for an adequate sentence.

Chong was charged under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 (Amended 1999) which carries a fine of between RM5,000 and RM10,000 and liable to jail of up to 12 months, on conviction.

The court also ordered her driving licence to be endorsed with the conviction.

In another case, a 36-year-old man was charged with dangerous driving which caused the death of a motorcyclist and a pillion rider in Penampang four years ago.

Chau Kim Chai pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Chau was accused of driving a Toyota Avanza in a dangerous manner that caused the death of Binsar Abdul San and pillion rider Salwa Amrun at 2.50pm on April 3, 2020 at Jalan Noosob Hungab.

The charge under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act carries a jail term of between five years and 10 years and a fine of between RM20,000 and RM50,000, if convicted.

The court fixed March 25 for case management and released Chau, who was represented by counsel Luke Ressa Balang, on a bail of RM1,500 in a surety.
