PENAMPANG: The Sabah Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) has identified 491 high-risk premises.

Its Director, Abdul Razak Muda, said the premises should have a Fire Certificate or Fire Certificate (FC).

“The JBPM has identified and found that only 284 premises have FCs while 207 have yet to apply or renew the certificate.

“Last year, legal action was taken against eight premises of which seven were subject to compounding while one premises in Lahad Datu was closed by order of the court.

“By comparison, as of February this year, seven cases have been taken to court involving four in Kota Kinabalu, two in Tawau and one in Lahad Datu.

“This shows that the Sabah JBPM is very serious in ensuring the every premises complies with the fire safety certificates,” he told the media after the Fire Safety Campaign Launch Ceremony in conjunction with the festive season here recently.

He urged all government and private agencies to cooperate with JBPM in curbing fire cases, especially building fires, so that they would not increase this year.

In the meantime, in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebrations, Abdul Razak advised the public to take precautionary measures in terms of safety and fire prevention in their respective homes.

“I would like to urge domestic residents to ensure that electrical equipment is turned off when leaving home to go back to the village and also not to make electrical wiring systems arbitrarily.

“Adults are also advised to monitor children when doing activities to play with firecrackers so that they do not do activities that could harm them,” he added.

Among the events at the ceremony were children’s colouring contests, the presentation of Fire Certificates to two new premises that received Fire Certificates for the first time, a fire safety exhibition and a firefighting show.

Also present were District Police Chief, Superintendent Sammy Newton, International Technology & Commercial Centre (ITCC) General Manager, Benjamin Malakun, JBPM Assistant State Operations Officer, Senior Fire Chief I, Hamsah Isnurdini and Assistant District Administration Officer, Noemi Dyena Johntren.
