THE State Government has approved a RM4.5 million allocation to upgrade village roads in the Sulaman area in Tuaran this year.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said this fund is to upgrade smaller roads with a distance ranging between 100m and 300m for the safety and convenience of road users.

“This is part of the efforts to upgrade the facilities and infrastructure of Sabah,” he said at a ceremony to present assistance to small traders and vendors in Sulaman at the Rumpun Bajau Sama Cultural Centre Hall, Tuaran, Feb 3.

A total of 125 petty traders and hawkers in the Sulaman area received RM5,000 in cash assistance from the Sabah Economic Development and Investment Authority (Sedia) and the Assemblyman’s Sentuhan Kasih allocation.

Hajiji, who is also Sulaman Assemblyman and Sedia Chairman, said the State Government is also committed to reducing the hardcore poverty rate in Sabah. Currently, there are more than 22,000 heads of households (KIR) fall under this category.

According to him, the Government requires government-linked companies (GLCs), government agencies and foreign and local investors who open factories in Sabah to hire workers from among the poorest families.

“The Government hopes that with such an initiative, apart from the efforts of ministries, departments and related agencies, the Government hopes to solve the problem of hardcover poverty,” he said.

On the assistance to petty traders and hawkers, Hajiji said it was one of the Government’s efforts to defend their plight.

Hajiji hoped the assistance would help expand their businesses and also help to increase their income and the living standard of their families.

“Petty traders and hawkers need to work diligently to improve their respective family’s standard of living,” he said.

Also present were Sedia Chief Executive Officer Datuk Seri Hashim Paijan; Chief Political Secretary to the Chief Minister Datuk Abdul Kassim Razali; Political Secretary to Finance Minister Datuk Johari Saiman, and Tuaran District Officer Hadzlan Jablee.
