Foh Sang CNY night market extended to three days
Phoong was met at 88 Marketplace on Sunday before delivering the final batch of 10,000 calendars to people under his constituency which has become his tradition. He said 700 food baskets were delivered to the people so far in 2024.
Kota Kinabalu: The Foh Sang Chinese New Year night market has been extended to three days this year, said Luyang Assemblyman Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe.

More than 110 lots have been allocated on Feb 6-8, five days before the year of the dragon debuts.

Phoong estimates a crowd of 10,000 during the three days which will be officiated by Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.

He said the Luyang Assemblyman office in collaboration with NGO Komuniti Luyang Sejahtera is charging RM550 a stall for the three days.

“Canopy, electricity and sanitation are provided. This offer is incomparable to other places, you just have to bring your own equipment.

“It is on a first come, first served basis. Organisers won’t be picking similar stalls as we don’t want too many selling char kuey teow,” he said.

Stage performances are replaced by a busking station, which Phoong said allows for more space while injecting a youthful spirit.

“Lido is also doing a night market organised by the Sabah Federation of Chinese Association. I believe its President, Tan Sri TC Goh will be making an announcement soon.”

On the congestion, Phoong joked that it is a good excuse for a leg exercise as such anticipated events are rare.

The Sabah Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship (Mide) Minister said he will be hosting his second Chinese New Year open house in Lido.

He said he wanted to go all out on the third day of festivities this time, following his first open house in Kota Kinabalu High School last year.

“Free lunch will be provided buffet style. The roads in front of the old Milimewa will be closed for the celebrations and everyone is welcomed to join.

“There will also be an SME Carnival featuring hawkers and local products offering cheaper goods through the Jualan Rahmah initiative,” he said.

Phoong was met at 88 Marketplace on Sunday before delivering the final batch of 10,000 calendars to people under his constituency which has become his tradition. He said 700 food baskets were delivered to the people so far in 2024.

Meanwhile, on water woes faced by Golden Hill and Taman Waja residents highlighted by the Daily Express (“Residents to YBs: Where are you?”), Phoong explained it had to do with distribution management.

“They have water but the pressure was diverted to the nearby hospital and city centre. The reservoir in Kopungit is unable to push the pressure their way.”

The residents were quite happy that a Sabah Water Department (SWD) representative was also present during the visit last Friday.

“The SWD will work to push more supply so that the situation improves,” he assured.

On another note, he believes the new mayor, Datuk Seri Sabin Samitah, can improve this rapidly urbanising city’s standards.

“We really need to focus in improving drainage management, grass cutting and garbage collection services as Sabahans want a higher standard of living.

“In other cities like Petaling and Subang Jaya, they have garbage collection schedules on billboards. Meanwhile in Kota Kinabalu, collection is still done arbitrarily.

“The issue of water and electricity is less severe in Luyang but the SWD must improve their capabilities. The Telibong 2 water treatment plant must operate in full swing this year,” he stressed.
