Irfan and Ramon instrumental in much needed win

WELL done Sabah FC for securing the much needed victory over Kedah FC on Sunday night.

The final score sheet showed 2-0 and the damage was actually done to the visitors in the first 45 minutes of the game.

Irfan Fazail and Ramon Machado were instrumental in this nice win and to score as early as in the 6th minute was the right tonic needed for Sabah FC.

The first goal was a result of a nice build up from the right back and from a cross ball, Ramon headed into the box for the alert Irfan to stab home from close range.

It was the start that I had hoped for and it helped to calm the nerves and we had better control of the game after the goal.

Both sides had their fair chances thereafter, but it was the combination of Ramon and Irfan that did the damage again in the 41st minute.

This time Irfan, who was through on goal, intelligently chipped the ball over the on rushing goalkeeper. It hit the post but Ramon was the quickest to react and had a simple task of just heading into an open goal.

It was a good lead going into the second half. Although Kedah FC tried hard to score in the second half, Sabah FC’s defence were better organised and able to hold the fort despite the pressure.

A well deserved victory for Sabah FC. It was the final game of the Super League and we did it in style by getting the three points to finish third in the Super League behind Selangor FC and champions JDT FC.

There will be more football to come in the AFC Cup but as for the Malaysian Football League, the season is over and I believe preparation for next season is ongoing.

Sabah FC will now be its own entity. Sabah Football Association (Safa), who managed Sabah FC for the past three seasons, will have to let go of their role as per the rules and can act only as advisor.

As I understand, most of the players are contracted into 2024 but I presume some of their contracts will not be renewed.

Coach Ong Kim Swee will be the best judge on that. I personally feel that we need to strengthen our defence line as we let in too many goals this season.

Anyway we will wait and see the outcome of the preparation for next season Once again congratulations to Sabah FC for finishing third in the country’s top tier league.
