Kota Kinabalu: The inaugural Kadazandusun Language (BKD) Teachers’ Awards Ceremony aimed to recognise the significant contributions of language activists, said Entrepreneurship Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick.

Ewon, who is also Upko President, said the programme aligned with the party’s struggle.

“The cooperation with various quarters, including Yayasan Bank Rakyat (YBR), in holding this programme also shows that the spirit of ‘mitatabang’ (working togetherness) is still flourishing within our community,” he said at the award ceremony here recently.

At the event, Tan Sri Bernard Dompok was presented the Gaa’ Huguan Manampasi Sunduvan Boos 2023 (Language Activist Award).

Bernard is an experienced political and administrative Kadazan leader.

His dedication and experience in the government made it possible to teach and learn BKD in primary schools in 1994 and in secondary schools in 2006.

Bernard was one of the pioneers and the main pillars in establishing the Kadazandusun Language Foundation (KLF) in 1994.

He is also active in enriching the Kadazandusun literary works through the Kadazandusun novel writing competition, which is now one of KLF’s flagship programmes where the winner will earn the ‘Gaa’ Koponuatan Novel Tan Sri Bernard G Dompok’ (Tan Sri Bernard G. Dompok Literary Award).

Aside from Bernard, other language teachers and activists were also awarded during the event.

Among them were Priscilla Moses Gukim, Alfredo Albert, Velter Jailih, Cynthiana John, Rosie Johnny, Camilla Anthony, Eugine Juani, Jita Gosungkit, Rita Manuel, Josphen Joannes, and Rufina Koyou, among others.

The Language Uplifter Recognition Awards were presented to Wilfred Mojilis, Peter Lidadun and the late Datuk Fred Sinidol.
