THE national-level Hawkers and Small Traders’ Day Carnival (HPPK) 2023 in Donggongon is expected to attract 10,000 visitors.

Entrepreneur Development and Cooperative Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick said the three-day carnival that started on Thursday is participated by more than 300 small entrepreneurs.

“As of 1pm today (Thursday), more than 6,500 visitors had been recorded,” he said after its launching ceremony at Buhavan Square, Thursday.

“The Ministry is confident that we will reach our target, and I hope visitors will not only come to support local small businesses but also take the opportunity to obtain information from the various government departments and agencies that have set up their booths at the venue.”

He said this includes entrepreneurship financing and training provided by agencies under the Ministry.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim officiated the carnival. Also present was Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.

“In our efforts to understand the small trader community, we need to come together with them in the places where they sell for a living, including at the community tamu and markets,” he said.

Ewon said as the son of a mother who used to sell in tamu, he understands the issues, challenges and hopes of the community of hawkers and small traders.

“Who else understands better than us who have been with this community?”

As such, he said, the Ministry took several initiatives to facilitate matters involving the small trader community.

“That is why the Ministry has established the District Level Entrepreneurs, Cooperatives, Hawkers and Small Traders Development Council (MPUKPPKPD) this year as one of the initiatives to simplify matters related to hawkers and small traders,” he said.

Ewon also thanked the Prime Minister for approving the RM20 million allocation in the 2024 Budget for the provision and upgrading of entrepreneurs’ booth facilities.

“This year, too, the Ministry has introduced the Hawkers and Small Traders Development Strategic Plan, the Formalisation Plan for Informal Entrepreneurs and the Home-based Business Guidelines.”

He said this is part of the initiatives to develop the competitiveness of the hawker and small business community.

In addition, the Ministry also reactivated the National Hawkers and Small Traders Consultative Council as a platform for engagement between the Government and these communities.
