Kota Kinabalu: A total of 62 Sabahans were awarded certificates for successfully completing Projek LINK (Latihan Industri Kimpalan), which is a Shell-certified welding programme at Kolej Vokasional Likas (KV Likas), in a graduation ceremony today.

Projek LINK is a collaborative effort between Sabah Shell Petroleum Company Limited (SSPC) and KV Likas.

SSPC has contributed RM450,000 to Projek LINK since 2019, which has produced 76 graduates who are employed not just locally, but internationally as well.

These graduates are fully versed in welding to international standards like ASME IX and AWS, up to the highest complexity of both 6G and 6GR.

SSPC is committed to produce a skilled workforce of qualified and competent welders for heavy industries such as oil and gas, shipping, construction and energy in Sabah through this initiative.

“I am delighted to see all our graduates today and extend my heartiest congratulations to each of them. I am proud of SSPC’s longstanding partnership with KV Likas, which has enabled our efforts in contributing towards the development of employment opportunities, creating internationally sought after talent, and empowering the economic growth of the local communities here in Sabah, while supporting the Sabah state government’s initiative to drive human capital development in the oil and gas sector”, shared Wong Kim Mun, General Manager, SSPC during his welcoming speech.

Project LINK is an example of a synergistic partnership between the private and public sectors towards human capital development.

This initiative is aimed at helping students who face financial and academic challenges to upskill themselves, while addressing the demand for skilled and trained workers in the oil and gas industry.

Besides Sabah, Projek LINK is also run in Miri and Bintulu, Sarawak. Shell Malaysia collaborates with both Kolej Vokasional Miri (KV Miri) and Kolej Vokasional Bintulu (KV Bintulu) respectively to run the programme for the youth there.

“I am confident that our graduates will be future leaders who will be well-equipped to lift this field to a higher level. It is our hope that more youths in Sabah will have good welding abilities and career opportunities,” said Haji Mokhtar Bin Haji Ibrahim, Director, Kolej Vokasional Likas, who also announced his upcoming retirement during the speech.
