PENAMPANG: Some 390 students in rural areas will participate in the “Be an English Speaker Today for a Better Tomorrow” (Best) programme which aims to improve their command of the English language, both formally and informally.

A joint collaboration between Yayasan Bank Rakyat (YBR) and INDEP Education Foundation (IEF), the programme was launched at SK Moyog here, Tuesday, and will be conducted in nine locations involving 90 teachers.

Penampang MP Datuk Ewon Benedick, who officiated the programme, commended YBR’s support in elevating the education level among Sabahan students, which also addresses educational gaps.

“This effort will increase English mastery among Sabahan students, in addition to raising awareness on the function of the English language as well as increasing the students’ self-confidence to use the language.

“The teachers involved in the programme are also experienced, which ensures participating students can strengthen and master the English language,” he said during the officiating ceremony.

Also present were YBR Chairman Datuk Philip Benedict Lasimbang, IEF Chairman Tan Sri Bernard Dompok, YBR General Manager Syaiful Rizal Abdul Ghani and YBR Corporate Communications Department Manager Mohamad Ghazali Zainal Abidin.

Earlier, Philip said he strongly supports all forms of educational programmes to improve the knowledge of students, especially in Sabah, through educational empowerment.

“The Best programme is among alternative steps in improving the level of English proficiency among school students and creating a competent environment in schools.

“Through Best, it facilitates efforts in ensuring the level of international language use is provided to all, especially school students.

“In addition, teachers also play an important role because they have to prepare learning modules and this stimulates the use of the language, fluent speech and overall English mastery,” he said.
