Kota Kinabalu: Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are encouraged to enhance the quality of their products and services using the latest technology to stimulate growth.

Putatan Member of Parliament and Keramat Assemblyman Datuk Shahelmey Yahya said that to move to the next level, entrepreneurs must obtain ISO certification and use retort technology.

“Having ISO certification ensures that our local products comply with international standards providing opportunities to enter the global market,” he said during the launch of the ISO certification and retort technology programme for members of Usahanita Putatan, held at a hotel.

“Retort technology has the potential to revolutionise the food and beverage industry, opening up opportunities to produce high-quality products with a longer lifespan,” added the Deputy Chief Minister III.

Shahelmey, who is also the Works Minister, hoped that participants would fully utilise the information gained from the programme.

Usahanita Putatan Chairperson Datin Nur Shafira Azurin said 65 women attended the programme, organised for their members.

“We want to emphasise the importance of obtaining ISO certification to enable their products to penetrate overseas markets.

“Even though entrepreneurs are doing well in the local market, they still face consumer complaints due to the absence of halal certification,” she said.

The programme aims to equip them with ISO certification and encourages entrepreneurs to join the association for guidance and assistance from relevant agencies, she said.

For instance, depending on the agency, entrepreneurs can secure grants, such as RM2,000, to improve their packaging and enhance marketing.
