Kota Kinabalu: The long awaited McDonald’s fast food restaurant chain, the first in the district, opened on Wednesday.

Part of Parklane City at Benoni it offers patrons from Papar, Sarawak and Brunei Darussalam as well as nearby districts to enjoy full experience of its drive-thru, casual dine-in and delivery centre services.

Developer of Parklane City cum WSG Group Managing Director Datuk Susan Wong Siew Guen said Papar folks would need no longer drive all the way to the State Capital for a McDonald meal.

“We handed over the keys to McDonald’s company Gerbang Alaf Restaurants Sdn Bhd on Aug 8, this year and in three months, the outlet is open for business on Nov 8,” she said.

Following the soft launch, the only McDonald’s to the south of Kota Kinabalu, as far as Papar and Sipitang, will now open its doors to serve customers in the vicinity.

The outlet spans 4,000 sq ft and is equipped with the latest technology and software to enable customers order and pay quickly through a smartphone application for drive-thru, dine-in or delivery services.

Renovation of the outlet is said to have cost RM5 million, and it is expected to create at least 100 job opportunities for the locals, who run its drive-thru, dine-in and delivery service, here,

“It is common knowledge that McDonald’s has strict requirements when deciding on its location.

“The fast-food chain has done detailed assessment on the local population, economy and spending power before deciding to open a new outlet at locations where the company deems to possess development and economic potential,” said Susan.

According to her, a road heading to the outlet will be built very soon.

She said patrons from the township here or from Kota Kinabalu can use the road inside the Parklane City to go to the fast food outlet while those coming from Bongawan, Beaufort, Membakut, Sipitang, Sarawak and Brunei Darussalam can drive into the German Bund road to go to the outlet or drive-thru.

McDonald’s company manager (Asset Management & Real Estate) Aldy Adrian Andrew said the opening of McDonald Drive Thru is its latest in Sabah for this year and also one of five stores targeted to be opened this year.

The outlet, which is 477th in the country, is the second of the five after the first opened at a petrol station in Bandar Sierra, Tebobon and another three upcoming outlets also to open this year, including at Kota Kinabalu International Airport near the Immigration counters.

Operation Manager Teh An Nee said they are pleased to see people coming into the new outlet here as early as 6am and operating until midnight. If business is good the operating hours might be extended.

Susan said the establishment of McDonald’s made more people realize that Benoni Commercial Centre and Parklane City are two investments options that must not be missed.

Soon she will focus on launching a four-tower 90 storey condominiums consisting in total of 656 units at Parklane City project site to be launched tentatively before upcoming celebration of Chinese New Year or during the festivity next year.

Susan also announced the upcoming 10 Star Cinema in Papar will commence operation by the end of the year, further enhancing the vibrancy of the new township.

“Phase 3 of the shoplots to be built side by side to the cinema will be ready by June next year as the cinema going to be opened next month.

“So the left over is the two-storey shoplots and servay hypermarket, opposite the cinema to be completed by middle of next year,” she said, adding that terrace houses in the Parklane City almost sold out.
