JAKARTA: The Transportation Ministry supports the government’s plan to achieve the goal of having two million electric motorcycles by 2025. One of the programs is by providing a free certificate of the type test registration or SRUT for manufacturers.

“We have completed around 28,000 SRUT for electric vehicles,” said Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi as quoted from the ministry’s official website on Thursday.

He said there are more than 133 million motorcycle users in Indonesia, with an annual demand of 5 million units. The demand even reached 10 million units per year before the Covid-19 pandemic.

A large number of electric motors operated in the country is expected to accelerate the transition from fuel-powered vehicles to battery-based vehicles.

Budi also outlined three keys to back the program; the quality of the battery, the number of battery charging stations or battery exchanges, and the quality of the engine of electric vehicles.

Other than reducing pollution, a huge number of electric motorbike users is expected to cut fuel subsidies. “The state budget for fuel subsidies can be used to build this nation,” the minister added.

Presidential Special Staff Diaz Hendropriyono said the government would focus on electric motorbikes because of their higher number compared to electric cars. Besides, their price is more competitive. “There are 35 electric motorcycle companies, while there are only three electric car companies.”
