Travelling Fellowship in Rural Surgery recipient to visit Sabah

Kuala Lumpur: Deputy chairman of the Faculty of Remote, Rural and Humanitarian Healthcare, Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd), Scotland, Prof Dr Andrew Kent has been awarded the Tuanku Muhriz Travelling Fellowship in Rural Surgery.

He is the second medical specialist to be awarded the fellowship.

Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), in a statement issued, stated that the consultant trauma and orthopaedic surgeon in Scotland, who is also the Director of Surgery at UK-Med, has always been engaged in training and humanitarian work, such as treating patients in troubled areas around the world.

“In 2021, he completed an assignment in Mosul, Iraq, by helping colleagues to manage wounded civilians on the battlefield, and recently he was involved in a humanitarian and medical mission in Ukraine.

“This November, he will be in Sabah to get a better understanding of the management of trauma cases in Borneo and share about disaster planning as well as explore the interior areas where surgical treatment is provided,” according to the statement.

The Tuanku Muhriz Traveling Fellowship in Rural Surgery is a strategic collaboration programme between RCSEd and UKM.

The fellowship is awarded by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in collaboration with UKM and the Ministry of Health (MoH) in line with the MoH Global Surgery initiative.

The setting up of the fellowship was mooted by the Yang Dipertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan Tuanku Muhriz Ibni Almarhum Tuanku Munawir, who is also UKM Chancellor, during the opening of the RCSEd International Office at the Advanced Surgical Skills Centre (ASSC), UKM, on Jan 17, 2018.

The fellowship is awarded to senior surgeons from the United Kingdom to come to Malaysia to gain experience in rural healthcare that provides surgical services to rural communities.

The recipients will also be involved in teaching and training sessions for medical officers and health staff at rural health clinics.

Tuanku Muhriz attended the Tuanku Muhriz Travelling Fellowship Lecture at RCSEd, Scotland, recently, and it was also attended by Tunku Ampuan Besar Negeri Sembilan Tuanku Aishah Rohani Tengku Besar Mahmud , Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah and UKM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mohd Ekhwan Toriman.
