13 months for lorry driver who went berserk at Kota Kinabalu International Airport

Kota Kinabalu: A lorry driver who damaged the transparent acrylic sneeze guards at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) here early this month was sentenced to 13 months’ jail.

Stanlyesyam Lucas, 37, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles to committing mischief by damaging two units of the transparent acrylic sneeze guards belonging to Malaysia Airport Berhad, with a loss of RM1,000, at the check-in counter A, International Airline, third floor, Departure Hall in KKIA at 11.30am on July 3.

Inspector Kelvan Elson Maik, prosecuting, told the court that the police arrested a man, later identified as Stanlyesyam at the said place following public information on a man who went berserk there.

A check on the CCTV footage, prior to the incident, Stanlyesyam was seen coming to the Customs counter and proceeded to Counter A. As he approached the check-in counter, he shoved the transparent acrylic sneeze guards, which then broke.

The court also heard that Stanlyesyam was earlier seen arriving at the airport with a motorcycle, parked it at the motorcycle parking lot and sat for an hour in the waiting hall and never spoke to anyone.

Duty counsel Lim Ming Zoong @ Lawrence, representing Stanlyesyam, requested a lenient sentence on the grounds that he is married with four children and was the sole breadwinner of his family.

Stanlyesyam also confessed to the court that at that time he was stressed with family matters.

He was charged under Section 427 of the Penal Code which provides for a jail term of between one year and five years and fine, or both, if convicted.

The court ordered him to serve the sentence from the date of his arrest.

In another case, an Indonesian mechanic was jailed six months for assisting in taking away a stolen handphone.

Lucas Rimba Andreas, 36, admitted to committing the offence on the handphone belonging to Jesse Yong in front of a workshop in Putatan on Feb 4 this year.

The court heard from the prosecution that the handphone was reported stolen in Penampang on Jan 31.

Lucas was charged under Section 414 of the Penal Code which provides a jail term of up to seven years or a fine, or both, on conviction.

Meanwhile, a 24-year-old man was jailed four days and fined RM1,500 or four months’ jail for trespassing into a swiftlet house in Inanam.

Rayner Dungkis pleaded guilty to sneaking into the swiftlet house belonging to one James Yong at Kg Bantayan at 5.05am on July 17.

The charge, under Section 448 of the Penal Code, carries a jail term of up three years or fine of up to RM5,000, or both, on conviction.

The court heard from the prosecution that Rayner was a former worker at the swiftlet house and was caught inside while in his bid to steal the bird nests and later handed to police.

Counsel Mohamad Syazwan Shah Mohamad Ali representing Rayner applied for a lenient sentence on the grounds that there was no loss as the bird nest had been returned to its owner and has two dependants.
