TAWAU: Chairman of Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines East Asian Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) East Borneo Economic Corridors (EBEC), Wong Thart Sin (pic), said the Trans Borneo Highway and Customs, Immigration, Quarantine and Security (CIQS) complex are needed to propel development in Tawau.Wong said Tawau is the closest neighbour connected to Nusantara in East Kalimantan, where Indonesia’s new capital is being sited.ADVERTISEMENT
He believed an estimated value chain of not less than USD100 billion would be created in the first phase of Nusantaras development from 2022 to 2025.
According to him, BIMP-EAGA Business Council with Asian Developments Bank initiated the said BIMP-EAGA Priority Infrastructure Projects (PIPs) under BIMP-EAGA connectivity pillar in 2016 and adopted in 2018. A budget of RM600 million was approved in 2020 to realise the construction of the Trans Borneo Highway and CIQS facilities which have been put on hold after the change of Federal Government.
Wong said the BIMP-EAGA Business Council supports the Chief Minister cum BIMP-EAGA Sabah Chairman Datuk Seri Hajiji Mohd Noor, both projects are badly needed to complement the development plans of Nusantara under private financing initiatives (PFI) or otherwise.
