20 Fish Aggregating Devices placed off Pulau Gaya: Petronas
Kota Kinabalu: Petronas recently placed 20 Fish Aggregating Devices (FAD) in waters off Gaya Island in collaboration with the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) and the Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority (LKIM).

The FAD project, which is part of Petronas and MMEA’s Sahabat Maritim initiative, intends to develop a new fishing ground away from restricted areas near offshore oil and gas facilities by deploying FAD devices, which are locally known as unjam-unjam.

“Through the support of MMEA and LKIM, we are able to put in place necessary measures to ensure the safety of people around our area of operations, which includes conducting awareness programmes to minimise maritime accidents and encroachment into restricted areas, especially among the fishing communities,” said Aimy Zairin Mohamed, Petronas’ General Manager of Upstream Strategic Communications. “We’ve also placed FAD to create a different fishing location away from the restricted areas,” he said. “In addition to ensuring safety, the Sahabat Maritim initiative strives to provide long-term benefits to fishing communities,” he added.

Petronas also distributed 30 packages containing basic supplies like rice and cooking oil to participants who took part in the FAD initiative.

Also present were MMEA’s Principal Assistant Director of Enforcement and Maritime Exercises for Sabah and Labuan, Maritime Commander Mahkos Ak Juing and Deputy Director of LKIM Sabah, Saliah Hj Mudin and Head of Petronas Sabah and Labuan, Siti Ayu Abdul Wahab.

Sahabat Maritim is a safety outreach initiative for coastal communities, particularly fishing towns in Sabah and Labuan that began in 2015. Its goal is to educate people about the hazards of vessel encroachment within the 500-meter safety radius surrounding Petronas’ offshore operations.
