SIBU: The oldest mosque in Sarawak at 161 years old, the Al-Qadim Mosque here is expected to be reopened for Tarawih prayers on the last ten days of this Ramadan.
State Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Dr Annuar Rapaee said the newly renovated mosque was built by an Indonesian cleric who came to Sibu to preach to the Muslim community in Kampung Nyabor in 1861 and could accommodate 500 worshippers.

According to him, the last time Muslims performed the congregational Tarawih prayers and obligatory prayers at the historic mosque was five years ago, before it was closed to make way for restoration.
“Of course, the Muslim community in this city, including the natives of Sibu who have been abroad for a long time, are very excited to perform Tarawih prayers at this historic mosque. The total cost of repairing and restoring the original design of the Al-Qadim Mosque is about RM2.2 million.
“I invite the Sibu Muslim community, when they return to their villages, to perform Tarawih prayers at the Al-Qadim Mosque this year,” he told reporters while inspecting the renovated mosque here.
