Govt staff is accused of receiving bribe
TAWAU: A 43-year-old government servant was charged on Thursday with abusing his position in order to receive a bribe involving a quotation worth RM15,000 for a department vehicle.

Mohaidy Tabin, 43, pleaded not guilty before Sessions Court Judge Awang Kerisnada Awang Mahmud.

The accused is alleged to have committed the offence at the Insolvency Department Office in Tawau on Oct 18, 2018 during his tenure as Branch Chief and Chairman of the Quotation Committee.

Mohaidy is said to have used his wife, Faizah Noor Fauzi, 40, as the successful bidder for the quotation for a Toyota Fortuner 2.7V with registration number WSA4879 worth RM15,000 to receive a bribe.

The court set April 8 for case management and offered Mohaidy bail of RM9,000 in one local surety.

The court also ordered Mohaidy to report to the Malaysia Anti-Corruption Commission’s (MACC) office once a month and his passport if any, to be impounded by the court until the disposal of his case. MACC Prosecuting Officer Rekhraj Singh appeared for the prosecution while Counsel Jhesseny P. Kang defended Mohaidy.

Meanwhile, a local man was fined RM10,000 or 10 months’ jail, and jailed one day for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Cadbury Khoo Yong Lain, 48, pleaded guilty before High Court Deputy Registrar, Amir Shah Amir Hassan who sat as a Magistrate, to committing the offence at 11.10pm on May 28, 2021 at a junction in Taman Kuhara Indah, here.

The offence under Section 45 (A) (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 (Act 333/87) provides for imprisonment of up to two years and fine of up to RM30,000, upon conviction. The court heard that Khoo was arrested during an Ops Mabuk.

The results of the respiratory screening test found alcohol content in the accused’s blood of 363 milligrams of ethyl in 100 millilitres of blood – almost seven times the prescribed limit.

Further investigation found, Khoo was on his way back from a restaurant along Jalan Kuhara heading to his house in Taman Kuhara Indah.

He was later detained by a police team from the Investigation Division and Traffic Enforcement to undergo respiratory screening on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.
